Reading through the treasures within Bookshop.org and happened on this debut. As a non-reproducing person, perhaps this doesn’t affect me. As a person who lives in the world, it most certainly does.
I speak firsthand to the agony of being the unwanted child of a teen pregnancy in my own book, “Drinking the Waters at the Shores of Hell.” Blair’s book picks up this discussion at the moment of fertilization. With her noting “…I make a cisgender hetrosexual argument” not to exclude others, but to focus on roles. It’s kindly delivered, with the point that she can only speak what she knows.
We learn which part of a pairing is fertile every single time, and who’s got a drastically shorter window, extended by incubating the longer-lived sperm.
As I tell in my own book, my Jr. High Sex Ed classes were blunt. Our gym teacher told her roomful of girls, “delivering a baby is like taking the biggest shit of your life.” No big deal, here’s a drawing showing what you look like on your outside and your inside, and this pair shows what a boy looks like. Zero drama, just basic education. It was identical to a 4-H class on animal husbandry.
People currently reach sexual maturity without our teacher’s timely classes and if Reddit’s any indication, they’re very poorly prepped in what to do to prevent pregnancy.
My gym teacher has long retired, but Blair’s book can educate all:
A woman’s body produces a fertile egg for approximately 24 hours each month, from puberty until menopause…about thirty-five to forty years.
A man’s sperm is fertile every single second of every single day…at eighty years old, a man who hit puberty at age twelve will have experienced 24,208 days of fertility.
…(L)et’s do the math…it turns out that compared to women, men have a little more than fifty times the number of fertile days.
“Ejaculate Responsibly” by Gabrielle Stanley Blair
Does Blair need to add an entire book, after this pithy summary? You betcha.
